The Jackson Association of Black Journalists recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship to MeKiyla Brown, a junior at Alcorn State University.

Applicants were asked to submit an application which asked two questions: What do you see as the role of journalism, especially in a state like Mississippi, and why do you want to pursue journalism?

Brown was selected by the JABJ board and awarded her prize in October 2022.

JABJ President Jimmie Gates said the organization’s goal is to encourage and nourish potential Black journalists and other journalists of color to play a role in telling the stories that keep citizens informed.

“JABJ was impressed with Alcorn State University journalism student MeKiyla Brown’s scholarship application. We believe MeKiyla has the potential to become an excellent journalist,” Gates said.

In her scholarship application, Brown said she believes the role of a journalist is to uncover the real story behind the story. Brown is an intern at the WLBT 3 Gray Media Training Center and reporter/producer at Alcorn's ASU-TV 13. She is also a student trainee with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center.

"Receiving this scholarship is such a great honor and a major step to continuing my education in my desired field," Brown said. "A quote that I live by is 'Good. Better. Best. Leave let it rest until your good is better and your better is your best', pushing me to put my best foot forward every day."
